London foodie Freddie Janssen and chef Anais van Manen have just opened Snackbar, a cafe situated next to Dalston Junction station, following a successful Kickstarter campaign.
Janssen, a former marketeer for Lyle's, became known for her pickling which led her to an award-winning street food career with F.A.T., followed by a book.
Partnering with chef Anais van Manen (ex-Nuala and Trullo), Janssen created a series of BBQ taco parties, set up stall at Meatopia and held residencies at Borough Market, The Laughing Heart and Legs.
Now, the pair has come together for Snackbar, in a partnership with FARM:shop - the world's first urban farming hub.
The new cafe offers a selection of globally- inspired, seasonal and creative sandwiches, salads, rice bowls, and snacks.
Using the farm's high-tech indoor allotments and large outdoor polytunnel, the cafe grows its own vegetables, herbs and mushrooms right in the heart of East London.
The menu serves up breakfast and brunch dishes such as Nutty Granola, Greek yoghurt, berries & rhubarb cardamom jam, amd Breakfast Tacos - a corn tortilla, scrambled eggs, chorizo & jalapeño pickle.
For lunch there's Babi Guling & Pickled Watermelon Sandwich - Balinese spiced porchetta, pickled watermelon & tamarind sambal, Kimchi & Stichelton Toastie - kimchi & Neal’s Yard Dairy cheese toastie & growing communities salad.
Also on offer, Snackbar Rice Bowl - rice bowl w/ Daikon pickles, sweetcorn & Hawkstone Woodland egg, with karaage chicken or grilled soy mushroom.
Snackbar also features a co-working space available for up to 20 people.
There are special one-off BBQs planned in the garden with major names in charge: Merlin Labron-Johnson (The Conduit) on 6 October, James Lowe (Lyle’s) 24 November, and Nuno Mendes (Maos) on 23 February 2020.
