Historic £1.29m Somerset hotel & restaurant for sale

The Old Vicarage Hotel & Restaurant in the market town Bridgwater, Somerset has been brought to market with a £1.29m price tag.

Dating back from 1327 the Old Vicarage has historic links to Bridgwater’s past and is alleged to be where Isambard Kingdom Brunel stayed whilst designing the local bridge.

The hotel’s restaurant and bar have a great reputation locally, seating up to 68 guests in total. There is also a covered, heated patio seating a further 42 guests with a wood fired pizza oven overlooking the large private gardens.

The award-winning ‘dog friendly’ hotel also includes 18 refurbished en-suite letting rooms ranging from singles to suites.

It still includes many of its original features such as oak wood panelled ceilings, open Hamstone fireplaces, exposed beams and an original ‘wig cupboard’ which all create the perfect atmosphere for the hotel’s paranormal nights and even earned it an episode on the Discovery Plus channel’s ‘’Help, My House is Haunted’ documentary.

The Old Vicarage has been owned by Peter Starling and Candida Leaver since 2019, and they are now selling due to retirement. They comment, ‘It has been a privilege to have been part of such an iconic building with it’s warm and welcoming atmosphere’.

This is an excellent opportunity to take on a profitable hotel and restaurant business and build upon it. A new owner could further develop the wedding and events services into the 84-seater marquee and there is potential to include additional letting rooms or more very comfortable owner accommodation.

Stephen Champion, Hotels Director at Christie & Co who is handling the sale, commented, “Since acquiring the hotel our clients have undertaken an extensive and sympathetic restoration that touched almost every single part of the building.

'The property is now presented in excellent order throughout and is in the perfect position for a new owner to take over. We have no doubt this unique hotel and turnkey operation will generate significant interest from both existing operators and newer entrants alike.”

The Old Vicarage Hotel is ideal for visitors looking to explore Somerset, with local attractions including the Quantocks where both Coleridge and Wordsworth lived, many RSPB reserves, and numerous historic houses and beaches.
