Innovative young chefs to launch first restaurant in Notting Hill

Two of Amsterdam’s most talked-about young chefs will land on Notting Hill’s Golborne Road on 15 February with The Butter Club or TBC, bringing their inventive luxury comfort food to London for the first time.

Gabriël Verheij and Alexandre Scour both have significant pedigrees with time in kitchens across the world and met in the kitchen at Vanderveen in Amsterdam’s Oud-Zuid neighbourhood - having previously refined their technique at the likes of the Michelin-starred RIJKS at the Rijksmuseum; the esteemed Tonka and Vue de Monde in Melbourne; and at Bar du Champagne, where Gabriël settled into his style, thanks to the restaurant’s lack of culinary rules.

Ever since, the two-man team has been gastronomically grafting, building a dedicated fan base through constant pop-ups, residencies and collaborations across the Dutch capital. Now, under the name 'TBC' (which stands for The Butter Club), they will take over 10 Golborne Road, serving a concise menu of globally-inspired dishes.

Starter plates of fried chicken with nori mayo and caviar; BBQ langoustine and Sichuan butter sauce; and yakitori leek or maitake mushroom with po - Korean dried meat or fish - will be followed by a revolving list of three mains - from which diners can choose the likes of Hokkaido milk bread lobster roll; fried oyster mushroom bao bun with soy glaze kimchi and pickled daikon; and the boys’ signature fried buttermilk chicken brioche feuilletée.

Dishes can be accompanied by sides including potato terrine with pesto aioli; mac and cheese with chives mayo and pickled onion; and ‘Dutch’ slaw. To finish, Londoners will be able to sample Alexandre and Gabo’s original square croissant creations - with fillings including cinnamon and pecan praline; corn and pickled blueberries; and dark chocolate and cacao nibs.

The menu will be paired with a selection of craft beers, buttery twists on classic cocktails and a booty-shaking hip hop soundtrack; while the decor will reflect the chef pair’s love affair with all things audio, with records displayed on walls by the likes of A Tribe Called Quest and Method Man.

“A lot of these ideas were formed when we lived together on the Nieuwe Herengracht canal,” explained Gabriël. “Since then we’ve been throwing supper clubs and one-off dinners at restaurants throughout Amsterdam - but bringing some of our favourite dishes to London is a huge thing for us. We can’t wait to show the UK what TBC is all about.”

Said Alexandre, “From what I can see, Notting Hill is popping off right now - there are so many good restaurants and Golborne Road is a big part of that. It’s the ideal place to humbly show Londoners the style of cooking and flavours we’ve been developing in Amsterdam.”

TBC opens on February 15th.
