Notts c-store changes hands after 18 years

The Bottom Shop in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire has been sold through Christie & Co.

This convenience store and off licence has been operated by John Blount and Hayley Smith for 18 years, previously under the Bargain Booze facia and more recently as an independent store.

During this time, the couple have grown the business into a profitable enterprise but made the decision to sell the store so they could concentrate on their family and other interests.

After launching the store to the open market on behalf of John and Hayley, Christie & Co received interest from multiple independent operators, attracted by the store’s good reputation locally, growing turnover and spacious flat above the store with a separate entrance, which provides an additional income.

For the buyers, Mr and Mrs Odedra, this is their first business. They made the most of the high demand for residential property, selling their house in Leicester to fund the purchase.

The Odedra's plan to continue to serve the community as John and Hayley have done, with no immediate plans to make any significant changes to the store.

Dave Morris, Director in Christie & Co’s Retail team handled the sale and commented, “John and Hayley have worked really hard to build a great business that is perfect for a first-time buyer.

'Their store standards and customer service have given them a great reputation locally, and the demand for convenience retail assets remains so strong, we were able to achieve a swift deal at a great price.

'It has been a pleasure to act for John and Hayley and we wish Mr and Mrs Odedra the best of luck.”
